The origin of the International Hoya Association began, as the Hoya Society-West Coast, which was a four page newsletter published every other month and first published in April of 1988. We quickly grew from a few local members that met on a quarterly basis here in the state of Oregon to seventy five members nationally but mostly members from the state of California. By the third issue in July-August 1988 the newsletter carried its first color photo of a hoya species. And was soon to become a quarterly publication. By the end of our second year of publication, this informal group of hoya aficionados, had been updated into "The International Hoya Association" with full non-profit status, and members worldwide. The small journal had grown to a full-fledged magazine of twenty to thirty pages, mostly in color and a name of its own "Fraterna" which in Latin means brotherly or a brotherly union with mutual interests. At the present time (the last quarter of our 22nd year as a non profit) we have one affiliated group "Svenska Hoya Sõllskapet" based in Borlõnge, Sweden. This group publishes a quarterly Swedish language magazine with many beautiful photos and lots of text, all about hoyas.
